The result is a deep black medium that makes white mycelium stand out sharply. Contamination is easier to spot, sectors are easier to pick out for isolation, and new wild specimens are easier to clean up. Activated charcoal also adsorbs some compounds from the medium, which some growers find helpful when cleaning cultures.

Storage and handling
- Store sealed and upside down, out of direct sunlight.
- For the longest life, refrigerate at 36–46°F and let plates warm to room temperature before use.
- Best used within about 30 days. Sealed, refrigerated plates often keep up to about 2 months; check for drying or contamination first.
