Shiitake Grain Spawn

$19.95
By Mush Ohio
Availability

Rich, savory shiitake for supplemented sawdust blocks.

Two ways to order:

  • Made fresh to order (ships in 3–4 weeks): We inoculate your bag after you order, so it arrives fully colonized and at peak vigor instead of aging on a shelf.
  • Ready to ship (ships in 1–3 days): When we have a fresh batch on hand, you can skip the wait. If it shows sold out, choose made fresh to order.

Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is one of the world's most popular culinary mushrooms, prized for its deep, smoky umami and firm, meaty caps. It rewards patience: blocks take longer to mature than oysters, but well-grown shiitake are worth the wait.

Includes WeMush tracking: Every order ships with a QR code linked to WeMush, our cultivation tracking platform. Scan it to view specimen details, log observations, and follow your grow, free with any Mush Ohio purchase.

Best use

This spawn is intended for sterilized supplemented hardwood sawdust blocks. For outdoor log cultivation, plug or sawdust spawn is the better fit.

Cultivation guidelines

  • Substrates: Sterilized supplemented hardwood sawdust or Master's Mix.
  • Colonization and maturation: 70–75°F (21–24°C). Blocks colonize, then gradually brown and form a firm outer skin; allow roughly 6–12 weeks in total before fruiting.
  • Fruiting: Trigger with a cold soak or a drop in temperature, then hold at 55–70°F (13–21°C) with 85–95% humidity, indirect light, and fresh air.
  • Harvest: When caps have opened but the edges still curl under slightly.

These are general guidelines; optimal conditions vary with your setup.

Storage and handling

  • Inspect the bag on arrival for damage or contamination.
  • If not using right away, refrigerate at 35–40°F (2–4°C).
  • For best results, use within 1–4 weeks of receipt.
