Meet the drag racer of our agar lineup. The Classic Series uses Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA), a simple, high-sugar, slightly acidic medium: pure glucose for quick energy plus peptone for protein, instead of the more complex mix of sugars and nutrients in malt extract.

That readily available sugar makes it a handy plate for comparing the speed and vigor of different isolates side by side. When you want to know which culture is your fastest, this is the plate you reach for.

Recommended use

• Best for: Gauging isolate vigor, speeding up transfers for species like King Trumpet and White Elm, and general fast-growth work.
• Good to know: Rich media tends to produce denser, fluffier growth. In our experience, species like Lion's Mane are easier to read on our leaner Foundation Series. SDA's low pH also favors fungi in general, so keep technique tight to avoid mold contaminants.

Storage and handling

• Store sealed and upside down, out of direct sunlight.
• For the longest life, refrigerate at 36–46°F and let plates warm to room temperature before use.
• Best used within about 30 days. Sealed, refrigerated plates often keep up to about 2 months; check for drying or contamination first.
